Oakhurst Watch, Local Safety (OWLS) The City of Decatur is proud to say that crime is the lowest it’s been in 30 years. The City of Decatur Police department attributes this lower crime rate to not only the officers’ proactive approach to policing but also to the help of the residents, in part through Neighborhood Watches. Oakhurst Watch, Local Safety (OWLS) is your local Neighborhood Watch, and is a subcommittee of the Oakhurst Neighborhood Association (ONA). Formed with the approval and assistance of your local police department, the city and the ONA, OWLS aids residents in providing each other mutual support in an effort to maintain a safe and healthy neighborhood. If you would like to learn more about OWLS, or to get more involved, contact your Block Captain or the current chair of OWLS, Michael Gaertner, via the below. Oakhurst Neighborhood Parent Coalition Under the direction of the Oakhurst Neighborhood Association, the Oakhurst Neighborhood Parent Coalition (ONPC) was founded in 2002. The Coalition’s goals are threefold. First, it serves as a vehicle to connect parents of pre-school age children in the area with other parents. Since many residents send their kids to various daycares or stay at home with their kids, many parents with similar-aged kids don’t know each other. The Coalition seeks to connect these same-age kids and parents before they even enter elementary school. Secondly, it serves as a bridge between the City Schools of Decatur and the Oakhurst community by keeping residents accurately informed and up-to-date on school issues and activities. And thirdly, the Coalition seeks to identify and recruit Oakhurst residents who don’t have school-aged children in order to get them involved in our schools. The ultimate goal is to make our neighborhood schools the best in Decatur! |

Beautification Committee
Our #1 goal this year is to beautify our neighborhood by fighting litter! Two major ways our committee has committed to combating the litter problem is by:
Organizing the bi-annual Oakhurst Litter Clean-up Day (one in the Spring and in the Fall) Volunteers perform a mass litter clean up of our streets on a Saturday morning.
Implementing the Oakhurst Adopt-a-Street program Once a month, Oakhurst volunteers keep our neighborhood beautiful by picking up litter on the street(s) they've adopted.
Other ideas include:
|
|
Anti-litter education at schools and clubs |
|
|
Education on importance of using Pay As You Throw (PAYT) trash bags so that litter does not end up on our streets. |
Our second goal is to beautify the Oakhurst business district since this is the heart of our neighborhood that residents and non-residents share. If you have any beautification ideas you would like to share or are interested in becoming a member of the Beautification Committee or in our Adopt-a-Street program, please contact Amelia Wright below:

Community Outreach Committee
The ONA Outreach committee strives to reach out to our "neighbors" in every sense of the word. We want to be more connected to the "neighbors" who live within Oakhurst as well as our "neighbors" who live in Oakhurst's bordering neighborhoods. The committee also strives to be a bridge between the ONA and various organizations such as the Decatur City Commission, the City Schools of Decatur and the Decatur Business Association. New members are always welcome, so if you'd like to become an ONA "ambassador," please contact Julie Rhame if you are interested.

History Committee
Oakhurst is filled with interesting people, and it's seen some interesting times. Do you have a story to tell? Do you have a neighbor who might be one of the unsung heroes of our community? We'd like to hear about it and let others know. The History Committee is dedicated to telling the story of Oakhurst, through articles in the Oakhurst Leaflet and this web site and through walking tours and other events.
