Cheryl Burnette, cheryl.burnette@decaturga.com,678-553-6541
Did you know that Decatur has received the award for Most Fit City two years in a row? Some of the credit for this award goes to Team Decatur which was formed by the City of Decatur to participate in the annual KP Corporate Run/Walk held in September each year. In 2011, Decatur Active Living also offered a new challenge to both runners and walkers to hit a “Grand Slam!” The 2011 program was a success, and 30 people will be given their award at the Run With the Dogs race on January 7, 2012.

Save the date! Decatur Farm to School Dine Out

will be held Tuesday, January 31, 2012 from 5-9 p.m.

Dine out at a select area restaurant on January 31, 2012 and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Decatur Farm to School (DF2S) to sustain its mission of integrating fresh, whole, locally produced foods into the City of Decatur school community’s classrooms and cafeterias.  Participating restaurants include Brick Store Pub, Iberian Pig, Cakes & Ale, The Yogurt Tap, Leon’s, Universal Joint, Steinbeck’s, Farmburger, McGowan’s and more. Funds raised will go toward supporting teacher workshops, kitchen training for CoD school cafeteria partners, classroom and garden projects, and student taste tests. Spread the word and be sure to take family, neighbors, and friends out for a nice evening to celebrate a great cause, support local businesses, and enjoy delicious food. DF2S is a branch of the Oakhurst Garden Community Project. Happy New Year from the Oakhurst Community Garden Project

Have you ever stopped a member of the Oakhurst Community Garden Project staff at an event, in a restaurant, or in one of the gardens and asked about a program, plants, etc?  Then you realize the OCGP actually has staff. Many comment, “This place has staff?”  Indeed, the OCG does–a staff of seven to carry out the Garden’s extensive programming.

Oakhurst Eats Black Eyed Peas

Every January 1st as I was growing up, my grandmother prepared black-eyed peas and hog jowls to ensure good luck for the New Year—or face certain catastrophe. If you have lived in Decatur for more than a week, I’m sure you knew enough to eat your black-eyed peas a few days ago, and you feel secure in your future for 2012.
